How to Build Chicken Roosts

Unlike other pets, chickens like to sleep on a roost. Just as most birds do, chickens naturally search for a high spot to relax during the day and to sleep for the night. Roosts are not difficult to construct and the birds prefer a thick branch or small trunk to perch on. Be sure to add shavings or a catch tray under the roost to make sanitation easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a tree branch or trunk that is roughly one to two inches in diameter (choose the diameter according to chicken breed, from bantam to larger breed). Leave the bark on. Allow about 10 inches of space on the roost per chicken. Larger breeds need more space. Choose a sturdy roost that does not span too wide a distance for heavy breeds (five Brahmas can weigh over 50 pounds) or allow for the extra weight strain.

Place the roost in a dark area of the coop. Position the roost so the birds can see out a window if possible. Measure about four feet from the ground - do not make the roost too high. Consider the chicken breed as some birds (silkies, Brahmas) need a lower perch. Screw the wood block into the wall to serve as the shelf for the roost to sit on. Figure in the weight of the birds when using screws and wood blocks.

Screw the roost to the blocks. Add a ladder for the birds to mount and dismount the roost.
