How to Use PVC Pipe for Chicken Roosts

Chickens are roosting birds that need a relatively high perch upon which to rest and sleep. Roosts need to be long enough to accommodate the flock --- roughly 11 inches per standard breed chicken. PVC can be used as a perch, but due to its smooth surface, it is not the best choice of material.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe, 2-inch diameter or larger
  • Screws
  • Plastic or plywood pieces (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the pipe diameter after considering the size of the chickens. Heavy breeds will need a pipe larger than 2 inches. Cut the PVC to the length needed for the coop size or birds. Use several roost areas if necessary.

    • 2

Fill the holes on each side of the PVC by cutting plastic or plywood to fit the hole size. Glue pieces of thick plastic or plywood on each end of the pipe. Let this dry completely.

    • 3

Place the roost no higher than 4 feet from the ground. Choose the exact height with reference to the flying ability and weight of the chicken breed. Screw blocks of wood into the wall for the pipe to sit on. Drill a hole for the screws on each end of the pipe. Screw the pipes onto the wood block seating.

Prevent the chickens from slipping on the pipe by gluing fake leather or some other non-slip fabric onto the pipe. Use impermeable, cleanable fabric, as the birds will need their roosts cleaned regularly.
