How to Keep Pet Water Bottles From Freezing

Pets need access to clean water to keep them healthy and strong. Water molecules stop moving when the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Molecules that do not move cause the water to consolidate and freeze. When considering a water bottle for a pet, begin with a naturally insulated material, such as plastic. Stay away from glass products, which quickly absorb the cold.

Instructions

  1. Keeping Pet Water Bottles From Freezing

    • 1

Cut a small hole into the bottom of an old sock. Pull the sock over the surface of the water bottle. Insert the water bottle nipple or straw through the hole. Wrapping an old sock or towel around the bottle helps it maintain heat.

    • 2

Wrap the water bottle with a piece of high-density foam. Duct tape the foam to the surface of the bottle. High-density foam helps ward off cold air from penetrating the bottle and prevents heat within the bottle from escaping.

    • 3

Place the water bottle indoors---or in a warmer location---to greatly reduce the risk of freezing. Keep both the water bottle and the pet in a room with moderated air flow and away from windows that are not closed or weather protected.
