Information About Mini Donkeys

Miniature donkeys are affectionate and healthy animals that require basic and preventative care over their long lifespan in order to thrive in a healthy, loving environment. Their affectionate and cuddly nature, small size and strong bond with their owner make them a desirable pet.

  1. Disposition

    • Most miniature donkeys are known to be affectionate animals for young and old alike that enjoy attention from people. The exception could be an ungelded male (jack) who may not be as laid-back as a gelded male.

    Appearance

    • Miniature donkeys reach a maximum height of 36 inches. From 20 to 30 lb. at birth, they will grow to 200 to 350 lb. They are well-known for their long ears and gray coat, though coat colors can vary from gray to brown to black to spotted.

    Lifespan

    • Miniature donkeys reach maturity at 3 years old and live to be 25 to 35 years old.

    Activities

    • Miniature donkeys are smart animals that can be trained to pull carts. They can also be trained to allow small children to ride them.

    Requirements

    • Miniature donkeys are companion animals. That means they do best with another animal as part of their herd. Their diet requirements consist of hay, grain, fresh water and a salt block. Miniature donkeys also require shelter from harsh elements, exercise and grazing time, and a fence to contain them safely.
