Find a supplier. You can purchase Black Angus beef cattle at an auction, from a farmer or a ranch. Cattle auctions are held regularly in most farming communities. For information on auctions in your area, you can contact your community center or auction house. In addition, farmers and ranches that are selling off cattle will advertise by word of mouth or by posting an ad on community bulletin boards.
Decide how you will transport the cattle before making your purchase. Cattle should be transported in a professional cattle trailer. You can purchase a small trailer, but it is a costly investment unless you will use it regularly. Some cattle sellers will transport the cattle to your location for you. This will save you time, energy and the expense of purchasing your own trailer.
Examine the cattle. The American Black Angus Beef Cattle Ranch comments that the "perfect" Black Angus has a "straight back, thick neck, wide brisket, round rump, thick rib eye and perfect intramuscular fat." The cattle should not appear to be weak or ill, and should have no external injuries or wounds.
Ask for health records. Ask the seller if he has any health records on the cattle you are examining so you can see if the cattle have had any vaccinations, medications or health issues.
Ask for certification that the cattle are purebred Black Angus cows. The person selling you the cattle should be able to provide documentation that the cows are purebred. If the cows do not have documentation, the price should be lowered.
How to Buy Black Angus Beef Cattle
Black Angus beef cattle can be purchased for breeding or for food. The Coyler Cattle Company states on its website that Black Angus beef cattle "are noted for their hardiness, survival, ability to re-breed and give acceptable performance and carcass quality - even in the less-than-ideal conditions faced by many ranchers." Black Angus cattle should be kept in a fenced-in field with plenty of room to run and fed balanced portions of hay and feed.
