How to Get Rid of Pig Odor

Pigs are highly intelligent and surprisingly clean animals that can make wonderful pets. As with most any pet, however, owning a pig also means having to deal with some unwanted odors. While many people use air fresheners or scented candles to deal with the smell, these methods only mask the odor and do nothing to eradicate it. The only way to truly get rid of an odor is to eliminate the source, and that means keeping your pig and its living area fresh and clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Groom your pig regularly. This includes buying a grooming brush specifically designed for a pig's hair and sensitive skin. Brush starting from the head and working your way down the body. Also be sure to use a damp towel to clean around the eyes, as pigs tend to get a crusty buildup around them.

    • 2

Wash and shampoo your pig using only shampoo designed for pigs. Pigs have very sensitive skin that will dry out with normal shampoo or frequent bathing. Only bathe them as needed. Bathe your pig in a large tub or other container that will allow your pig to wade in the water.

Clean your pig's waste area regularly. Regularly cleaning your pig's waste area will keep foul odors from building up and will keep your pig clean when he uses it.

Clean any sheets or fabrics that have absorbed the smell of your pig in the washer. Use a detergent that is designed to remove odors. When you put the sheets and fabrics in the dryer, also add in two extra dryer sheets to absorb any remaining odor and freshen the load.

Clean any stained areas with a pet stain cleaner that is designed for odor removal and uses enzymes, such as Nature's Miracle. These cleaners are effective because they break down the odor-causing substances in your pig's urine and waste, which is the only way to truly remove the scent.

Use an odor neutralizer on all fabrics, curtains and carpets in the areas where your pig frequents. This final step will help to freshen your pig's entire living area.
