The American bison is one of the largest mammals in North America. Adult males, known as bulls, can reach up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms). Adult females, known as cows, are typically smaller, reaching up to 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) tall and weighing up to 1,000 pounds (454 kilograms).
While the American bison is indeed a very large animal, it is not the largest in the United States. The title of largest animal in the US belongs to the moose, which can reach up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall and weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).
