Why animals trust humans when they get abused?

It is important to recognize that not all animals exhibit trust toward humans who might have abused them. Animals possess survival instincts and respond accordingly to individuals displaying abusive behavior. Their reactions can vary; in some cases, fear and avoidance are common, leading animals to withdraw and remain at a distance from those identified as harmful. Some abused animals develop distrust, potentially resulting in aggression as a self-defense mechanism if feeling cornered or threatened. Building trust usually involves a patient, responsible process wherein abusers learn to show kindness and respect toward the welfare of the affected animal.
