Who regulates non profit animal shelters?

There is no single federal agency that regulates non- profit animal shelters in the United States. However, there are a number of state and local agencies that may have some oversight responsibilities, such as the Department of Agriculture or the Department of Health. In addition, there are a number of private organizations that accredit animal shelters, such as the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement (AAWA). These organizations set standards for animal care and management, and shelters that meet these standards are awarded accreditation.
