Where did Australian animals originate from?

Australian animals evolved from species that once lived on the supercontinent of Gondwana. Gondwana, one of two great landmasses that formed from the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea, included what is now Africa, South America, Antarctica, Madagascar, India, Australia, and New Zealand. As Gondwana drifted apart over millions of years, the organisms on each continent evolved independently, leading to the unique flora and fauna of each continent, including Australia.
