How many animals are on the extinct list?
As of 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species lists 30,817 species as extinct, out of a total of 136,700 assessed species. This number is constantly changing as more species are assessed and some may move to other categories such as critically endangered or vulnerable. Additionally, there are many species that have not been assessed yet, and some of those may be extinct as well.
