How to Care for Chickens After Laying Eggs

Keeping chickens for the purpose of gathering eggs is a rewarding task. Give your chickens food, water and shelter and they will provide you with eggs on a daily basis. Keep a large number of hens for a small egg-selling business or just a few to produce eggs for your family. Chickens do not require a great deal of special care. Proper nutrition, safety from predators and a clean dry home will keep your chickens happy.

Instructions

Feed laying hens chicken feed with about 18 percent protein. Leave food out in containers for the chickens or scatter it two or three times daily by hand. Leave our plenty of fresh water. Feed the chickens greens if they don't have access to vegetation.

Keep the chickens in a fenced area to discourage predators. The fence must be high enough so the chickens can't fly over or a net or wire "ceiling" should be added over the top of the chicken cage.

    • 3

Provide the chickens with shelter. If you don't have a chicken coop, dog houses provide an appropriate place for chickens to get out of the elements. Make sure you can access any structure you provide the chickens for the purposes of cleaning and collecting eggs. Keep the hen houses or chicken coops clean to prevent disease or insect infestation. Replace straw whenever it is dirty.

Collect eggs daily. Hens will lay eggs anywhere they feel safe. Check around the chicken pen, in bushes and behind small buildings. To encourage hens to lay in nesting boxes, place a fake egg in the box to show that it is a good egg-laying spot.
