How to Get Rid of Dandruff in a Horse's Mane

Dandruff occurs when the skin under the horse̵7;s mane begins to flake and fall off. This flaking is exaggerated by several underlying conditions, including eczema, hormonal issues, seasonal changes, fungal infection, dehydration and stress. Treating the dandruff is accomplished with proper grooming techniques. Although the dandruff will not vanish overnight, being persistent in the treatment will cause the dandruff to become manageable in a matter of weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet the horse̵7;s mane with lukewarm water and work an oatmeal horse shampoo into the hair and skin to remove any dead skin cells and flaking.

    • 2

Rinse off the shampoo well with lukewarm water. Do not leave behind any soapy residue as this will lead to skin irritation and a worsening of dandruff symptoms.

    • 3

Comb through the mane with a horse comb. Use gentle pressure to remove any tangles and dandruff.

    • 4

Wipe away any remaining skin flakes and dandruff from the horse̵7;s skin with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Spray the horse̵7;s mane with a light coating of a mane and tail conditioner. The conditioner will restore the mane̵7;s shine and provide lubrication to prevent further drying and flaking.

    • 6

Work eucalyptus oil into the roots of the horse̵7;s mane. The eucalyptus oil will kill any fungal infections that are causing a worsening of symptoms.

    • 7

Repeat washing the horse̵7;s mane with the shampoo and applying the mane and tail conditioner and eucalyptus oil every two weeks.
