How to Care for an Attacked Chicken

Chickens can be attacked by dogs, cats, wild animals or other chickens. Injuries that result from these attacks include bleeding, broken feathers or broken limbs. A chicken that has been attacked by another animal requires special care from its owner, in order to recover from the attack.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the injured chicken from the rest of the birds and isolate it in a separate cage or pen. Give the bird plenty of blankets to nest in, so that it feels comfortable while recovering.

    • 2

Examine the injured chicken to see if it is bleeding and to determine the extent of the injuries. It may have broken and lost feathers or broken wings and legs.

    • 3

Stop the bleeding; apply pressure with a clean old rag. Hold the rag in place and change it out with new rags, until the bleeding stops completely. Remove any broken feathers.

    • 4

Clean any wounds with hydrogen peroxide to prevent infections. See a veterinarian if you suspect the chicken has a broken leg or wing.

    • 5

Feed the chicken its favorite food to encourage it to eat. Include a variety of melons and grapes to encourage it to take-in food that has a high water content. Supply the chicken with plenty of fresh water.
