How to Prevent Sheep From Sticking Their Heads in Fences

The phrase "to follow like sheep" originates because sheep naturally follow the flock. This can cause problems when a sheep gets into difficulties, as others fail to see the danger. Farmers pen sheep with fencing to prevent them from walking onto roads or into dangerous areas. Sheep, though, are very inquisitive and have a tendency to try to push their heads through the fencing and get stuck.

Instructions

    • 1
      Sheep follow the leader.

Dig out holes 18 inches deep to secure fence posts around the perimeter of the sheep run. Bury the fence posts at regular intervals around the pen. Mix sand and cement to create a ballast and secure the posts.

Choose a woven wire fence to discourage sheep from straying. Two-by-6-inch wire is the correct size to prevent sheep getting their heads or hooves caught in the fencing. Make sure the wire is fixed tightly to the posts and secure with staples or screws.

Opt for an electric fence if the sheep are at risk from predators. This style of fencing contains an electric current which runs through the steel fence wires. If an animal makes contact with the fence it will receive a shock sent through the fence. The sheep will soon learn to stay away from the fence.

Feed the sheep away from the fences so that they are drawn to the middle of the field or pen. Place the feed near their shelter and water supply. Don't leave food near the fences or encourage feeding from over the fence, as this will make the flock keener to find out what is on the other side of the fence.

Arrange a safe lambing pen when the ewes are ready to give birth. Ewes rarely require assistance when giving birth, but keeping them in a secure, covered pen at least 4-by-5-feet wide will give them enough room and give them a weatherproof place to give birth. it will also facilitate easier care of the newborns at the time they are most vulnerable.
