How to Use Aqueous Pens

Pen-Aqueous is an antibiotic (penicillin G and procaine) for cattle, sheep, horses and pigs. Pen-Aqueous is most commonly used to treat pneumonia, shipping fever, erysipelas, strangles and other pathogenic organisms. However, before you administer Pen-Aqueous to any livestock, it is important to have a diagnosis from a veterinarian to determine the pathogen and the duration of treatment. The correct way to use Pen-Aqueous is via intramuscular injection.

Instructions

    • 1

Boil the needle and syringe in water for 15 minutes to sterilize them.

    • 2

Wipe the rubber cap on the Pen Aqueous bottle with a clean paper towel moistened with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.

    • 3

Vigorously rub the injection site with a clean towel moistened with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol to disinfect it. The best site for intramuscular injection is one with ample visible muscle on the fleshy part of the rump, hip or thigh. Avoid blood vessels or major nerves.

    • 4

Insert the needle and load the syringe with Pen-Aqueous solution. The recommended dosage is 1mL per 100lbs of body weight per day. Do not load more than 10mL. If the animal requires a dose larger than that, make a second injection at another site on the other side of the animal.

    • 5

Inject the needle into the site. Pull back the plunger slightly. If you see blood in the solution, you have hit a blood vessel. Pull the needle out and choose another spot. If you see no blood, depress the plunger and inject the entirety of the solution. Before injecting the solution avoid blood vessels and major nerves.
