How to Build a Calving Pen

It is often desirable to separate cows from the herd during calving, especially in colder climates. Harsh weather exposure can be a factor in the survival of the calf. Heifers also need more help than older cows and so it is best to have them under observation during their first calving. A calving pen can be simple or complex depending on the rancher's preference. You can buy a commercial calving pen, but you can construct your own calving pen using supplies already on the farm.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area where the calving pen will be situated. Higher ground is best. Choose a low-traffic place.

    • 2

Dig and set treated 4-inch by 4-inch by 8-foot posts at 12-foot intervals forming a rectangle that is 12-feet wide by 24-feet long.

    • 3

Attach heavy stock panels to the 4-inch by 4-inch by 8-foot posts using heavy fencing staples to enclose the area. Leave one side open for the gate.

    • 4

Drill a ½-inch pilot hole using the portable drill and ½-inch wood bit into the gate post. Screw the gate bolts into the post. Hang the gate and make sure that it swings freely.

    • 5

Cover one end of the enclosure with wheat straw or other bedding for the cow and leave the other end of the enclosure bare.
