How to Cool Poultry in the Summer

Poultry, such as chickens and turkeys, that are kept as pets or on a farm need to be kept cool during the hot days of the summer just like humans do. Chickens and turkeys who are kept comfortable will be generally healthier and more productive when it comes to egg laying. Keeping your poultry cool does not have to be expensive. There are many ways to provide comfort to your birds when it is hot outside.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide your poultry with access to shelter, such as a chicken coop, during the day to escape the sun beating down on them. Building your chicken coop and pen under the shade of trees will keep the shelter and area around it cooler.

    • 2

Install fans in the chicken coop and leave them on during hot days to keep the air circulating.

    • 3

Place a sprinkler or mister on top of the chicken coop and leave it running during the hottest part of the day. The water cools down the roof and walls, which then keeps the interior of the coop cooler.

    • 4

Keep a supply of fresh, cold water available for your poultry at all times.

    • 5

Feed your poultry supplemental vitamins, mixed into their drinking water, to reduce stress and keep them healthy during the hot summer months.
