How to Use Carrots to Deworm Goats

The gentle bleating of a goat can be heard on both formal and hobby farms. Worms are a common parasite found in farm animals, goats included. Whether the goats are stock or pets, they must be dewormed when the worms are discovered. However, the deworming liquid or pills, taken orally, are generally distasteful to the animal. By inserting the medicine into a carrot, one of a goat's favorite treats, the deworming medicine can be effectively and quickly given.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the carrot onto the cutting board and cut it in half.

    • 2

Hold the carrot's larger half firmly against the board and, using your other hand, insert the paring knife as deeply as you can around the core of the carrot.

    • 3

Tilt the knife so that it will hit the middle of the core deep inside without piercing through the carrot's exterior. Perform this action several more times until the core has been fully cut around.

    • 4

Insert the knife's tip into the middle of the core and remove it.

    • 5

Cut a 1/4-inch amount from the front of the core that was just withdrawn.

    • 6

Insert the necessary amount of pills into the cored carrot for one dosage, according to the manufacturer's instructions as well as those of the veterinarian. Push them in firmly with the skewer.

    • 7

Place the plug back in the top of the carrot.

    • 8

Feed the doctored carrot to the goat, holding your hand flat while doing so.
