How to Secure a Cattle Rub

Like many mammals, cattle love to rub their skin against gently abrasive objects. A cattle rub installed in their pen comforts and soothes them when they brush against it. It can also be used to control flies, pinkeye and lice on the animals. By applying insecticide to the cattle rub, it is passed onto the cattle's skin as they rub against it. Installing a cattle rub requires the ideal location between two posts.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a location in the cattle's pen that has two 6-to-8 foot posts approximately 15 feet apart; if nothing like that exists, you may need to improvise, using one post from the fence around the pen or some other structure.

    • 2

Wrap the rope from one end of the cattle rub around the post about 6 feet off the ground. Wrap it around several times, and then secure it to the rub with several knots.

    • 3

Wrap the other end of the rope around the other post and secure in a similar fashion. The center of the rub should be adjusted to the correct height to brush against the cattle's back as they pass under it.
