How to Make a Round Bale Ring for a Horse

Horses need to allowed constant access to sustenance. This includes during the winter months, when it may not be as simple as letting them run free and chew on the grass -- grass may not be in abundant enough supply. In which case, you have to look at supplying hay for these natural grazers. You must ensure the hay is fresh and free of mold and should be kept off the ground so as to reduce waste. One option for feeding horses is the round bale ring, which is created by placing bales on top of wooden pallets in a ring arrangement.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand your several pallets upright, so that the boards are running vertically. These upright pallets with provide structural integrity for your ring. Additionally, one of the pallets acts as a pedestal for the hay.

    • 2

Place your round bale on top of a wooden pallet before using any additional pallets you have to make a ring around the outside.

    • 3

Connect the pallets together using wire, in order to make a ring structure around the hay. This method means the horse will have to reach over to eat the hay, but is stopped from stepping in -- and potentially contaminating -- the hay by the ring fence structure. From there, it's a simple process to remove old hay and replace with fresh hay.
