How to Remove Spurs From Roosters

Removing the spurs from a rooster helps to ensure the safety of the bird and other animals in the surrounding area. The sharp spurs of a rooster are used for fighting. The bony structure extends from the back of the fowl's leg and comes to a sharp point at the end. Much like a fingernail, trimming the spur helps the situation, but the process must be repeated to keep the spur dull and short. Permanent removal may be performed by a veterinarian when the bird is still a chick.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the rooster in a towel. Secure the wings and body in a towel to hold the bird still.

    • 2

Grasp the spur with one hand and measure 5/8 of the length starting from the leg. This is the cutting point.

    • 3

Cut the spur at the decided point with pruning shears. The strong, sharp shears will quickly remove the spur, leaving it short and flat on the end.
