Removing the spurs from a rooster helps to ensure the safety of the bird and other animals in the surrounding area. The sharp spurs of a rooster are used for fighting. The bony structure extends from the back of the fowl's leg and comes to a sharp point at the end. Much like a fingernail, trimming the spur helps the situation, but the process must be repeated to keep the spur dull and short. Permanent removal may be performed by a veterinarian when the bird is still a chick.
