How to Learn The Body Parts on a Beef Heifer

Learning the parts of a cow is necessary for butchers, animal study in programs such as 4-H, farmers and ranchers and for large animal veterinary study. A beef heifer has many of the same parts as a human, just on a different scale. Many of the parts have different names for a cow than they do for humans. Identifying the parts of a cow in their proper place will help further any of these occupations or hobbies.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the diagrams of the cow. Depending on the topic of study, you may have to learn the meat sections of a cow, the names of basic cow parts, the skeletal system of a cow or the different systems of a cow, such as digestive tract or reproductive tract.

    • 2

Try to identify the parts on a photo of a cow without any of the parts listed. Write the names of the parts next to the pictures of the cow. Compare your answers with the real listed diagram. Note any discrepancies and study the diagram once again.

    • 3

Make flash cards with the names of the different cow parts on the front of the cards and where to find them on the back. Use the cards both ways. Ask yourself where to find the cow parts in one game. In the second game, identify the name of the part based on the description of where to find it.

    • 4

Ask a friend or family member to point out areas of the cow for you to name. Sometimes having a friend help during study makes memorization easier.

    • 5

List all of the necessary beef heifer parts on a piece of paper. Compare this list to the actual list of parts to discover if you missed any parts. Continue to study using all of the above methods until you have the parts of the cow memorized.
