The spore of Clostridium tetani can stay in soil for years and is resistant to many standard disinfection processes. It infects donkeys by taking advantage of open wounds and cuts. Tetanus is a serious condition, it can lead to fatality if left untreated.

      Administer antibiotics, tetanus toxoids and anti-toxins to your donkey. These are usually administered for several weeks. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe these medications.

      Protect your donkey from lights and sounds that might stimulate nervousness.

      Place your donkey in a darkened stall and plug it's ears with cotton.
