What risks are there to a young heifer if you abort calf?

Increased risk of uterine prolapse: When a calf is aborted, the uterus is suddenly empty and can become flaccid and weak. This can increase the risk of the uterus prolapsing (falling out of the vagina). Uterine prolapses can be a life-threatening condition, and require immediate veterinary attention.

Damage to the reproductive tract: The process of inducing an abortion can cause damage to the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and ovaries. This damage can lead to future breeding problems, including infertility.

Bleeding and infection: Inducing an abortion can cause bleeding and infection of the reproductive tract. In some cases, this can lead to sepsis (a life-threatening condition in which bacteria enter the bloodstream).

Trauma and injury: Inducing an abortion can cause trauma and injury to the heifer, both physically and psychologically. Physical trauma can include injuries to the cervix, uterus, ovaries, and vagina. Psychological trauma can include stress, anxiety, and depression.

Death: In some cases, inducing an abortion can lead to death of the heifer. This risk is greatest when the abortion is performed by an inexperienced person or under unsanitary conditions.
