What do you feed reindeer?

Reindeer are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Their diet varies depending on the season and location:

Summer:

* Grasses: They graze on various grasses, including sedges and rushes.

* Herbs: They also eat different herbs and wildflowers.

* Lichens: In some areas, they may consume lichens, especially in the summer months when they're more accessible.

* Mushrooms: They occasionally eat mushrooms.

Winter:

* Lichens: This is their primary food source during winter. They use their powerful sense of smell to find lichens hidden under the snow.

* Twigs and bark: Reindeer will also eat twigs and bark, especially during harsh winters when lichen is scarce.

Other things to note:

* Salt licks: Reindeer need salt for their health and will often seek out natural salt licks.

* Minerals: They also benefit from consuming minerals from soil or rocks.

Important note: Reindeer kept in captivity, such as those in farms or zoos, are usually fed a mixture of hay, grain, and sometimes vegetables to ensure a balanced diet.
