How to Make a Rabbit Feeder Out of Wood

Rabbit feeders automatically dispense food to rabbits. They are ideal for rabbit owners on vacation, since they provide several days̵7; worth of fresh food for the animals. Importantly, only dry food should be used with feeders, since wet food will spoil. Make your own rabbit feeder from sheets of plywood.

Instructions

  1. Building a Dish

    • 1

Make a wooden tray or dish in which the food will dispense. Keep the dish small so the food stays fresh and dry. Make the dish about 6-by-6-inches, whether using it to feed a single rabbit or multiple numbers. Since rabbits are grazers, they will likely feed at different times.

    • 2

Cut a 6-by-6 inch square of plywood. Cut three 6-by-3 1/2-inch pieces of plywood. Arrange these pieces at 90-degree angles along three of the edges of the square piece.

    • 3

Nail the pieces into place from the outer sides through both panels.

    Building the Food Storage Container

    • 4

Cut a 10-by-6 1/2-inch piece of plywood, a 7-by-6 1/2-inch piece of plywood and two 7-by-3 inch pieces of plywood.

    • 5

Assemble the cut pieces together. Lay the 10-by-6-inch piece on a flat surface. Place the two 7-by-3-inch pieces at a 90-degree angle along each long edge of the 10-by-6 inch piece, leaving 3 inches at either end, provided both pieces are flushed on the same side. Nail these pieces into place.

    • 6

Place the 7-by-6 1/2-inch piece of plywood on top of the construction to make a four-sided figure. Flush this piece so that it aligns with the edges of the three other pieces. Nail in to place, from the outer sides.

    • 7

Assemble the container and the dish. Turn the container so the extended side faces downward. Place it on top of the dish so that this extended side provides the back (fourth) side of the dish. Hammer it into place by nailing from the back along the bottom edge and the two corner edges, where wood pieces overlap.

    • 8

Place the feeder inside the rabbit cage along a wall. Pour the dry food into the container from the top. Fill it about two-thirds of the way. The dish at the bottom will automatically fill with food, as necessary.
