How to Wean Calves by the Moon

Weaning calves can be stressful for all parties involved. Calves first separated from their mothers can bawl for days and restlessly move around their enclosure, tiring themselves and stirring up dust. Farming tradition suggests that the phases of the moon can have an influence on a weaned calf's behavior. Choosing the right time of the month to wean your calves can potentially result in a much quieter and easier process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait to wean your calves until as close to the new moon as possible. Folklore varies as to whether it is better to wean just before or just after the new moon, so choose whichever is most convenient for you.

    • 2

Separate the calves as far as possible from their mothers, preferably in a green pasture. If no such pasture is available, place them in a corral, using water sprinklers to keep down the dust raised by their restless movement.

    • 3

Position water troughs and feed bunks near the fence line. Weaning calves will tend to move along the perimeter of an enclosure, so this will help them find the feed and adjust to eating it sooner.
