How to Feed Hogs

Hogs need a high energy diet that is composed mainly of grains in order to grow properly. They require a diet that is low in fiber, but supplemented with sufficient amounts of proteins and vitamins. Feed your hogs homemade mix or commercial pig food, which is easy to dole out. Give your hogs 1 pound of commercial pig food for each month of age. Do not go beyond 6 pounds, as it is an unnecessary waste of money and the hogs will get too fat.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the feed into two portions for the day. Hogs love to eat, so make the feeding time a fun time for them.

    • 2

Place the feed in a trough. Otherwise, toss the commercial hog food pellets around the pen and let the hogs forage for them. Do not worry about wasting the pellets, as it will not happen. However, the hogs will take time to forage the food and this could make the feeding time last longer.

    • 3

Put the grains in the feed trough. Supplement the grains with vitamins and proteins to keep the pigs healthy.

    • 4

Supplement the diet with root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes and beets. Allow the hogs to forage for the vegetables, which have high water content but are low on proteins and energy compared to grains.

    • 5

Provide constant access to clean, fresh drinking water. Hogs may tip over the water to make a muddy hole for wallowing or they may stand in the water trough to clean their muddy faces. Check the trough regularly.

    • 6

Feed the hogs some amount of fiber. While hogs digest very little fiber, it is necessary for proper digestion and bowel movement. Barley straw used in their bedding will provide the fiber for the hogs to chew on.
