How to Keep Water Thawed for Chickens

Chickens on a farm live outside in a barn or chicken coop all year, including winter. The chickens drink from a water dish or bowl to stay hydrated. In the winter, if the water in the dish freezes the chickens can't drink it. Without water, the chickens' health will deteriorate and they will eventually die. The water needs to be kept warm so that it does not freeze.

Instructions

    • 1

      Purchase an electric heating pad.

    • 2

Place the heating pad below the water dish or bowl.

    • 3

      Plug the heating pad in.

    • 4

Turn the heating pad on. If the heating pad has a setting, set it to medium as this should generate enough heat to keep the water in the bowl from freezing.

    • 5

Keep the heating pad running all day so the water in the bowl never has a chance to freeze. Discontinue use of the heating pad when the weather is not below freezing. The heating pad will only warm the water and not make it hot.
