How to Feed a Lactating Donkey

Donkeys normally do not need to be fed any sort of supplements if they have access to an adequate pasture. Since donkeys are more prone to obesity and have fewer energy requirements than other farm animals, it is important not to overfeed them. But pregnant or lactating donkeys and donkeys that are used for working sometimes need to be fed a different diet than other donkeys, to ensure they get all of the nutrients that are lost during pregnancy, nursing and working.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide at least 1/2 acre of pasture per donkey. However, allowing donkeys to graze on lush pasture is not recommended.

    • 2

Place a fortified trace mineral block in the area your lactating donkey will be staying.

    • 3

Feed your lactating donkey hay that is made up of approximately half timothy and half alfalfa.

    • 4

Provide the lactating donkey with two to four handfuls of a concentrated feed every day. A prepared horse feed works well.

    • 5

Keep fresh, clean water in front of all of your donkeys every day.
