How to Feed Sugar Beets to Chickens

Raising chickens can be a very rewarding way to get some of your groceries. Whether you raise them for meat, eggs or both, you'll get the best results if you feed them healthy, organic food in addition to giving them access to pasture land. On grass, chickens can eat seeds in the ground, bugs and greens. Beets are one of many vegetables that chickens enjoy. While they can eat as many beet greens as they want, beets should be one part of their diet, not the whole thing.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a local source of beets if you don't grow them yourself. If you have a local beet processor, you may be able to get some beet pulp to feed to your chickens.

    • 2

Grate sugar beets and place them in a bowl or bucket with other greens and vegetables your chickens like. Carrots and rutabagas are also popular root vegetables among chickens.

    • 3

Place the bowl in the chicken coop, if you don't have a lot of chickens. If you feed them often from a bowl, they will know to go to it to see what they're getting.

    • 4

Sprinkle grated beets directly on the chicken coop floor or the ground where the chickens are grazing.

    • 5

Give beets directly to chickens without grating them if you don't have a lot or it's just an occasional treat. Beets are not highly digestible so feed one at a time to your chickens, if feeding daily. 5-10 chickens can consume one beet very quickly.
