How to Help a Llama Choking on Grain

Llamas are members of the camelid family and are native to South America. Llamas are quirky and can be prone to nervousness. Nervousness can cause a llama to eat too quickly. When eating grains, this often results in choking. You can help chocking llamas to remove hazardous blockages. Ensure that you watch llamas when they are eating grains or pellets, and reduce stress at mealtimes to prevent choking. Slow their eating down by placing large rocks into the grain bins so that they have to eat around them.

Instructions

Place your hand under the lower jaw of the llama and raise it up. This should open up the throat and may be enough to dislodge stuck grain.

    • 2

Dislodge stuck grain by massaging the llama's throat. Rub your open palm up and down the throat gently. You can often see the bolus of food lodged on the right-hand side of the esophagus. Try to calm the llama down by talking in a soothing tone. If you have someone to help you, try to isolate the llama from the herd to reduce stress.

Pour a tiny bit of water (5 cc) into the llama's mouth to help dislodge the blockage. Do not pour excessive amounts of water into the animal's mouth or it may exacerbate the problem.
