How Do I Bottle Feed a Cow?

Although nursing from the mother cow is best, in situations where the mother has passed away or has rejected the cow there is no choice for a baby cow but to bottle feed. For calves who actively nurse, an occasional bottle feeding can provide needed vitamins and nutrients, as well as encourage docility and social behavior. While bottle feeding a baby cow is not difficult, it does require patience, a commitment of time and a nurturing mindset.

Instructions

    • 1

Add the milk replacer and water to the two quart bottle feeder according to the package directions. If the calf is newborn, and has never been fed by her mother, add the colostrum supplements to the bottle as well. This is necessary only for the first feeding. Screw the lid onto the bottle feeder, and shake vigorously to mix.

Corral the calf into a small enclosed area. Small pens and loading chutes are ideal locations for feeding an inexperienced calf.

    • 3

Sprinkle a small amount of dry milk replacer powder on the calf's nose. This should cause the calf to begin licking its nose. Sprinkle a small amount of the powder on the nipple of the bottle feeder as well.

    • 4

Offer the bottle to the calf by gently pressing the nipple into its mouth. With any luck, the calf will begin suckling. If the calf doesn't take the bottle, continue to try for 10-15 minutes. If the calf is still resistant, wait an hour or two and repeat the process.
