How to Feed Chickens Mealworms

While most domestic chickens are fed handfuls of pellets composed of barley, oats and fish meal, their wild cousins are free to roam the countryside, living off fresh grasses and live, succulent worms. If you want to liven up your hen's day and remind her of her carefree wild heritage, you may consider getting her some mealworms as a treat. Mealworms are often grown by chicken lovers, but today they can also be purchased as a dried treat.

Instructions

    • 1

Toss the worms onto the ground when the chickens are out, they will quickly find them and fight over them.

    • 2

Hold some in your hand. Go up to the chickens and let them eat the worms out of your hand. This will increase the chicken's affection for you as well.

    • 3

Grind up dried mealworms in a food processor or blender. Mix this in with the chickens' regular food to give them some extra protein. Do not allow the amount of worms added to the food to exceed 10 percent of the total feed content.
