How to Make a Chicken Feeder Using PVC Pipe

One drawback to owning a chicken coop is having to take the time to feed the chickens once or twice a day. But there's no need for that if you make a feeder out of inexpensive PVC pipe. The feeder is made from four pieces of pipe that fit together to house the food. As the chickens eat from the bottom of the feeder, gravity forces food down to fill the void. This type of feeder helps keep food clean, too.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 45-degree, 5-inch diameter PVC pipe elbows
  • 1 piece of 5-inch diameter PVC pipe, 2-feet to 6-feet long
  • Electric drill
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • 24-inch piece of wire
  • PVC pipe end cap

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a 45-degree elbow in your left hand and second 45-degree elbow in your right hand.

    • 2

Insert the male end of one of the 45-degree elbows into the female end of the other 45-degree elbow. You may have to twist the two pieces back and forth until they seat. Twist the two pieces until they form a U-shape.

    • 3

Insert a piece of 5-inch diameter pipe into the female end of the unfitted 45-degree elbow. Push them together until they seat. The longer the pipe is, the more feed it will hold.

    • 4

Using an electric drill equipped with a 1/4-inch drill bit, drill two 1/4-inch holes on opposite sides of the pipe, 2 inches down from the top of the straight pipe.

    • 5

Slide a 24-inch piece of wire through the two holes and twist the ends of the wire together to form a loop.

    • 6

Hang the feeder in the corner of a chicken coop or chicken run so that the bottom lip of the lowest 45 degree elbow is 6 inches above the ground. Use the wire loop to hang it from an eye hook.

    • 7

Fill the PVC pipe feeder with chicken feed and place a PVC end cap on top of the pipe. The end cap will protect the feed from moisture if it hangs outside.
