How to Keep Water From Freezing in Water Tanks for Cows

To keep a source of open water for cows in the field in freezing weather, you will need to install a heater for your stock tanks. Many types of stock tank heaters are available, from solar powered heaters, to electric heaters that float on the water's surface, attach to the side, or sit in the bottom of the tank. Elevating the stock tank using cinder blocks will also keep the tank from freezing at the bottom.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a stock tank heater. You can buy them online, or from feed and farm supply stores.

    • 2

Install the stock tank heater according to the manufacturer's instructions. Drop-in heaters sit in the bottom of the tank. Floating heaters sit on the surface of the water, but may need to be anchored in the middle of the tank. Over-the-side heaters hook on the side of the tank.

Elevate the water tank off the ground using cinder blocks. Air underneath the tank insulates it from the cold ground.
