While calves can be fed by their mothers, dairy owners usually opt to feed their calves a milk replacer so they can avoid feeding them milk that could be sold instead. Feeding calves milk replacer is more economical and more convenient. Calves can be housed separately from their mothers, away from the dangers of being kicked or stepped on. There are also diseases that can be passed to the calf through tainted milk, such as bovine viral diarrhea, Pasteurella, E. coli and salmonella.
