How to Lay and Crumble Chicken Feed

Feeding chickens a proper diet while using the proper technique is a major component in the success a person will have raising chickens. There are a number of different types of feed suitable for chickens and several different ways to administer it. The diet chosen for your chickens is dependent upon the intended purpose of the animal; feed for egg laying hens will not support adequate growth in broiler chickens. Chicken rations are produced in mash, pellet or crumble form and are easy to administer.

  • Crumbles (diet)
  • 3 plastic pails, 1 gallon each

  • Bag of corn &shell grit

      Purchase the right food for your chickens to eat. Depending on their age, this will be either be starter mix for younger chickens or a grain and mash crumble mixture for more mature animals. Purchase a small bag of corn and shell grit as well. If you are unsure, ask your local feed supplier for the best feed to use for your circumstances.

      Take 1 empty plastic pail and add 16 ounces of warm water to it. Add 3 cups of grain and crumbles mix to the water. If you have a larger quantity of chickens, you can add more water and mix as desired. Mix the crumbles around with your hand until they are completely soaked.

      Take the bucket with the moist crumbles to the chicken pen and walk inside. Be careful not to step on any of the chickens when entering the pen. Stop in the middle of the pen and scoop some of the crumbles with your hand and drop it into a dish or throw it gently around the pen in different places so the chickens can all eat without fighting over the mixture.

      Continue to throw the crumbles out until the bucket is completely empty. Take the bucket to a water spigot and rinse the bucket out until it is clean. Fill it up with cold water. Take the bucket of water to the chickens' water source. Top off, or empty and clean the water source if dirty. Refill the chickens' water source with the fresh water from the bucket.

      Open the bag of corn and shell grit. Take several handfuls to the chicken pen, then throw it out across the ground by moving your wrist. Scatter it well. Be sure to also place some grit on the ground near where the laying boxes are kept. Place the rest of the grit in a dry spot for use the following day.
