How to Be Sure a Mother Rabbit Is Feeding Her Babies

You might have stumbled across a bundle of newborn rabbits. Whether or not you have seen the mother around them, you might wonder whether they are being fed. To gain peace of mind and to be sure that nature is taking its course, there are a few things you can look for. If you feel comfortable, check the babies and the mother to ensure that the babies are receiving the proper feedings.

Instructions

Look at the babies' stomachs. A well-fed rabbit should have a full-looking stomach, similar to that of the Pillsbury Doughboy. If the rabbits are not being fed, the stomach tends to look sunken in, with wrinkled skin caused by dehydration.

Look at the positioning of the babies. If they are bunched close together, the mother is feeding them.

Check the mother for signs of lactation. Hold her upright and gently turn her upside down in your lap. See whether her nipples are swollen. Apply a slight pressure in a milking motion to a nipple. A clear liquid or a small amount of milk should come out if the mother is in fact feeding her babies.
