How to Install a Corner Feeder in a Horse Trailer

Whoever came up with the phrase, "eat like a horse," knew what they were talking about. The average horse needs a minimum of 10,000 to 12,000 calories every day -- and that's if they're not working hard for a living. A corner feeder in your horse trailer can help your horse meet that daily requirement while on the road or at your travel destination. The instructions here describe setting up a corner feeder in a stock trailer (a trailer with slatted sides). However, you can add this feature to any horse trailer that doesn't already come with a built-in feeder.

Things You'll Need

  • Corner feeder made of fabric
  • Strands of 1/4 inch chain
  • Small link connectors that screw closed

You can outfit your horse trailer with a corner feeder. This picture shows an enclosed-type horse trailer.

Loop three strands of 1/4 inch chain around the trailer slats, at the approximate height where your horse can eat from the corner feeder and at the height of each corner of the feeder. Securely fasten the ends of the chain to each other, using a connector that screws closed.

Attach snap clips to the three sides of the corner feeder. The clips should be difficult for the horse to open. They should be sturdy but as small as possible to prevent the feeder bag from drooping. Use a feeder made of heavy fabric. These are soft and safe for use in a trailer, and will fold away to save room during storage.

Attach the other end of the clips to the chains you just wrapped around the slats. Be sure the feeder doesn't hang too loosely from the slats. Feed the horse in the trailer to make sure the feeder is at the right height and position before you need to use it on a trip.
