How to Make a Total Mixed Ration

Total Mixed Ration is a way of feeding cattle. Not only does it allow a farmer to know exactly which by-products are included in their cattle's feed (usually reducing feeding costs), it can also boost cows' health and fertility. Total Mixed Ration is usually a mixture of grains, protein supplements and by-products which provide the cows with a complete diet. It does require knowledge of feed and nutritional components to be completely successful, however.

Purchase a mixer. These are usually large drums with paddles inside that mix the ration. A mixer is usually necessary if you have a large amount of ration to make frequently, although it is possible to hand mix.

Evaluate the cows. Look at the body condition of the cows and determine whether they need more or less energy than average. Consider what you use the cows for. Different ingredients are useful for different purposes, and what is great for producing strong calves may not be as good for dairy cows.

Mix the ingredients. As a rule, each mix should contain dry food such as grain in addition to hay and forage. Avoid allowing the mixer to cut the mix too short, as this can have an impact on cows' eating habits. Try to leave a mixture of long and short hay and forage.

Feed the cows at least twice a day. While cows can be fed just once a day, this is much more likely to lead to underweight cows, which produce less milk and offspring. Ideally, feed in the morning and after milking when the cows will be hungry.
