How to Feed White Tail Deer

If you want to improve the health and diet of your local whitetail deer herd, start to supplement their food. It provides nutrition during lean winter months, increases the size of the deer and helps maintain herd populations. However, too much supplemental feeding can lead to damaged habitats and an over-population of whitetail. When choosing to supplement your herd, do so with a plan and use nutritionally based feed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a feeder in your herds' natural feeding habitat. Fence it with wire to keep cattle out if any are around, but be sure the deer can get to the food. Leave a section open on the bottom so the smaller deer have access.

    • 2

Feed your herd a mix of corn and commercial pellet feed loaded with protein. This provides optimum nutritional supplements.

    • 3

Decrease the corn gradually, as it is used only to attract the deer but is not ideal for their digestive system.

    • 4

Keep the feeder full year-round. Some months you may need to fill it more often, as the herd's needs change with the seasons.
