Instructions
Set up a box for your worms. This will enable you to control their environment, and keep them warm and safe. Drill several holes in the sides of your box to encourage circulation.
Fill the box halfway with shredded newspaper, and the rest of the way with potting or garden soil. Wet the mixture until it's wet but not soggy. This produces an ideal environment of moisture and grit for earthworms.
Put your worms in their box. Feed them by folding kitchen scraps into the soil. Clean the bedding of the worm farm by replacing it every three months. When you're cleaning the box, harvest worms. Feed the largest to your chickens, and put the smaller worms back into the bedding to continue growing.
Keep the box indoors, particularly during the winter months. Worms cannot survive freezing temperatures and will likely suffer at temperatures under 50 degrees F. Always maintain good air circulation and moisture around the worms.
How to Raise Worms for Chicken Feed
Raising worms can be an easy, straightforward experience, and caring for living things is always rewarding. Start a worm farm to provide an easy source of food for your barnyard chickens, and use the byproducts as compost for your garden. Keep in mind that worms need some protection if they're to grow big enough to feed chickens.
