How to Attach Reins to Myler Bit Hooks

Myler bits are becoming popular in the equestrian world, with many riders finding that these bits provide superior responsiveness and feel in their mounts. These bits are available in a wide variety of sizes and mouthpieces, providing both English and Western riders a chance to try them out. But even the best bit will not work properly if it is fitted incorrectly, so it is important for all horse owners to pay close attention to the way they attach the reins to their Myler bits.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bridle on your horse, or hang the bridle from a bridle rack while you work. Locate the holes on the sides of the bit.

    • 2

Find the curved hook at each end of the reins if you are working with an English bridle. If you have a Western bridle note how the reins attach--some reins are attached with a piece of braided leather, while others are designed to snap onto the bit.

    • 3

Pull each end of the English reins free of the curved hook by pushing back on the reins and lifting the slit in the leather free of the hook. Slide the end of the rein free of the leather holders and then slide it into the slot on the bit.

Pull the end of the leather rein back over the curved metal hook and slide that hook into the slit in the end of the rein. Pull back on the rein to lock it into place, then slide the end of the rein through the leather keepers.

Snap each Western rein onto the slot in the Myler bit if using snap reins. If you are using traditional Western reins, untie the leather strap that secures the rein, then pull that small leather piece free of the holes in the end of the rein. Run the end of the rein through the slot on the Myler bit, then run the small leather piece through the holes and tie it securely in place.
