How to Cut Big Bales of Hay

Large bales of hay, whether round or square, are much more cost effective to feed livestock. Large bales can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to feeding them out because they are heavy and awkward to move. By using the right methods, you can save money with minimal effort over the small, easy-to-handle bales.

Instructions

  1. Using a Portion of a Large Hay Bale

    • 1

Cut the strings or wrap holding the bale in its compacted shape. Just like their smaller cousins, large hay bales are made of tightly compressed flakes of leaves and stems. Round bales adhere to the same principle as well, only they wrap around the core. To understand how to peel off from a round bale, think of unwinding a roll of paper towels.

    • 2

Insert the points of the pitchfork at the desired spot. If you wish to use half of the bale, insert the forks in the middle. If you are just feeding a single cow or horse, adjust the tines to the amount of hay you want to use.

On round bales, slowly work your way around the bale, loosening the amount of hay you are wanting to use.

    • 3

Twist the pitchfork slightly in a back and forth method. This will allow the flakes to separate. Use the pitchfork to fork the hay over to the livestock.

    • 4

Re-tie the cut strings. This will prevent the remaining portion of the bale from falling apart.
