- Illness. Calves can be born with or develop a number of illnesses that can cause them to stop eating. These include bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, and viral infections, such as bovine viral diarrhea (BVD).
- Nutritional Deficiencies. Calves need a diet that is high in energy, protein, and minerals. If they are not getting enough of these nutrients, they may not eat as well.
- Discomfort. Calves can be uncomfortable for a number of reasons, such as being too hot or too cold, having pain from an injury, or feeling stressed. If they are uncomfortable, they may not want to eat.
- Competition. If there are other calves or animals competing for food, a calf may not be able to get enough to eat.
- Too Much Milk. Calves that are fed too much milk may become bloated and uncomfortable, which can lead to them not eating.
- Poor-Quality Feed. Calves may not eat if their feed is spoiled or unpalatable.
- Management Issues. Calves may not eat if they are not being fed at regular intervals or if their environment is not clean.
