How much do elephants eat?
An African bush elephant can consume up to 600 pounds (272 kilograms) of food per day. That's about the weight of a small car! Elephants are herbivores, and their diet consists mainly of leaves, grasses, bark, and fruit. They use their long trunks to reach high up into trees and strip the leaves off branches. Elephants also use their trunks to drink water, and they can suck up to 2 gallons (7.6 liters) of water at a time.
