How to Build a Goat Cage

A goat cage provides a safe area for goats to run around and eat in while they are on your property. Goats do not need a large area, but the more goats you have, the larger the space. If possible, try to set up the goat cage in an area that has shade and a source of water so that your goats are as comfortable as possible in the heat. If you live in an area where it gets below freezing, you also will have to build an additional goat shed to house the goats during cold weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the space you will need for the enclosure. Each goat needs about 200 square feet of room for grazing and exercise.

    • 2

Mark out the four corners of the pen with spray paint.

    • 3

Dig out the four corner post holes with the post digger. Make the hole about 24 inches deep. Fill the base of each hole halfway full of cement. Set the posts down inside the cement. Fill the rest of the holes with dirt.

    • 4

Place a new post using the same construction method every 8 feet along the walls of the cage pen.

    • 5

Start the wire along one of the fence corner posts. Wear heavy work gloves to protect your hands. Wrap the wire tightly around the fence post. Hold the wire in place with staples. Place the wire about six inches above the ground. Stretch the wire tightly from post to post. Wrap the wire around each post and staple in place. Wrap the wire around all but two of the posts, where you will place the gate.

    • 6

Repeat the wire stringing process two more times, at the two-feet mark and three inches down from the top of the fence posts.

    • 7

Install the gate posts in the open area left in the fence. Attach the gate to the fence using the enclosed hinges. Attach a lock to the gate to prevent unwanted visitors in the goat cage.
