How to De-Worm a Goat

Goats are particularly susceptible to worms because they graze pasture and constantly consume the worm larvae. It is important to deworm them to keep the worms at bay and the animals healthy. Deworm the goats in the spring before turning them out to pasture, three weeks later and after the first frost in the fall. Follow your vet's recommendations on deworming ewes and kids. Rotate your dewormers each year so the worms do not build a tolerance to the dewormers. Use different products within the three main dewormer categories: the benzimidazoles, the nicotinics and the avermectins.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh the goat and calculate how much dewormer to give it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not underdose the goat or the dewormer may not be effective.

    • 2

Tie the goat somewhere secure and straddle it to hold it still with your legs. Use a fence or corner to further assist you in controlling the goat.

    • 3

Insert the dewormer syringe into the corner of the goats mouth and move it towards the throat so it sits on the back of the tongue. Slowly depress the plunger until all the dewormer has been injected into the goat. Remove the syringe when the goat has swallowed the dewormer.
